Few situations are more frustrating for breeders than a healthy-looking mare that simply doesn't become pregnant. After one unsuccessful breeding attempt, it's easy to assume it was just bad luck. But when a mare repeatedly fails to conceive, it's time to investigate why.

The good news is that most fertility problems have an identifiable cause, and modern equine reproductive medicine offers advanced diagnostic tools that can significantly improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Not every unsuccessful breeding cycle indicates infertility.

Even under ideal conditions, pregnancy rates after a single breeding cycle are never 100%. Fertility depends on multiple factors, including the mare, the stallion, semen quality, timing, and reproductive management.

However, further investigation is recommended if:

  • your mare has failed to conceive after two or three well-managed breeding cycles,
  • she repeatedly loses pregnancies shortly after conception,
  • she has a history of uterine infections,
  • she is older than 15 years,

The Most Common Reasons a Mare Doesn't Get Pregnant

3. Age-Related Changes

Age has a significant impact on fertility.

As mares grow older, several changes may reduce pregnancy rates:

  • decreased egg quality,
  • reduced uterine elasticity,
  • chronic inflammation,
  • cervical fibrosis,
  • accumulation of uterine fluid.

Evaluating both mare and stallion provides the highest chance of identifying the true cause of infertility.

This enables veterinarians to prescribe targeted treatment rather than relying on broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Endometrial Biopsy

In selected mares, particularly older broodmares or those with repeated pregnancy failures, an endometrial biopsy provides valuable information about the long-term health of the uterus.

It also offers one of the best indicators of future fertility.

Hormonal Assessment

Although less common than uterine disease, hormonal imbalances may also contribute to reproductive failure and should be investigated when indicated.

One of the most challenging situations occurs when every routine examination appears normal, yet the mare still fails to conceive.

Depending on the individual case, options may include:

  • embryo transfer,
  • oocyte aspiration (OPU),
  • intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI),
  • specialized reproductive management for high-value sport mares.

These techniques can often produce successful pregnancies even in mares that have experienced repeated breeding failures through conventional methods.
